For so long, international cricket was regarded as the pinnacle of the sport, the best standard, the best players, the most intense competition. But in T20 cricket, that is arguably now no longer the case. While Test and ODI cricket remain the standard bearers for the first-class and 50-over formats, international T20 cricket is often a lesser standard than that played in a number of franchise tournaments around the world, where the concentration of high-class T20 players is better and competing demands fewer. But for the next five matches between India and England, that trend will surely be reversed.

The T20I series that begins on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad pits the top two ranked sides in the world against each other. IPL Betting Tips In T20I cricket, they are the market leaders, with England ranked number one and India close by in second place. Of all the Test playing nations, they have, by some distance, the best win-loss record in T20Is over the last two years. Although India are missing Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, they still have a very strong squad while England are more or less at full-strength.

Then there is the added context of the T20 World Cup to come later this year. Eoin Morgan, England's captain, believes India are favourites for that tournament in their own conditions and few would disagree. But England should be there or thereabouts too and this series is an opportunity for them to test themselves against one of their competitors for the title in the sort of conditions that Morgan believes they still need to improve in. India too have things to learn, about the balance of their side, their batting combinations and certain individuals. They must do so quickly. These are the only three T20Is they have before the World Cup.

None of that is to say that the result of this series does not matter. Clearly, it matters very much because, first and foremost, international cricket is about winning in the here and now. But neither team will want to give the other any psychological advantage ahead of the World Cup by losing this series.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the series will be how both bowling attacks cope against two power packed batting line-ups. India's bowling absentees weaken them significantly although the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been recalled to the squad after a run of injuries. He has not played for India since December 2019 but, as the most experienced seamer in the squad, could lead the pace attack.

England's bowling attack generally remains an inconsistent area of the team. Jofra Archer is set to be fit for the series after an elbow injury ruled him out of two of the Test matches. It is a significant boost for Morgan's team given Archer has the skills to bowl in any phase of the game, including with the new ball and at the death. After missing out on the final XI in South Africa, where England played Adil Rashid as the sole spinner, Moeen Ali should be returned to the team as well, providing England with greater balance. Even so, there are questions for England's bowlers to answer in this series.

The previous two T20I series between the teams have ended in victories for India by the margin of 2-1. Online Cricket ID The second of those came in the English summer of 2018 and was the last time England lost a T20I series. India's last series defeat was in early 2019 when Australia beat them 2-0, a Glenn Maxwell special taking Aaron Finch's team to victory in the second match in Bangalore. Given the quality in both the India and England squads, this series has the potential to deliver similarly spectacular performances. It should be a fascinating five matches.

What to Expect

Given all five games are being played at the same venue, Eoin Morgan expects the surfaces to start off good for batting and then get slower and drier as the series goes on, particularly if some of them are re-used. For the opening fixture, however, a good, true surface is expected. It's going to be another hot evening in Ahmedabad, with temperatures set to stay in the 30s for the duration of the game, while dew could also be a factor for the bowlers of both teams to contend with.

Team News

India

Shikhar Dhawan will make way for India's returning vice-captain Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul will hold on to the first-choice opener's slot, confirmed Indian skipper Virat Kohli on the eve of the game. In the middle of a purple patch, Rishabh Pant has earned his comeback, which leaves a two-way battle between Shreyas Iyer and uncapped Suryakumar Yadav for the No. 4 slot.

On the bowling front, Varun Chakravarthy has failed his fitness test and will miss the series, while there are doubts over the availability of Rahul Tewatia as well. Washington Sundar will form the spin pair with Yuzvendra Chahal, but India could be tempted to bring in Axar Patel as well if the conditions favour a spin-heavy attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar could be in line for a comeback with T Natarajan also tending to a niggle at the NCA in Bengaluru, and hence not available for at least the series opener. Cricket Betting Tips This leaves a three-way battle between Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini for the two remaining slots.

Possible XI: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer/Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur/Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Navdeep Saini/Axar Patel

England

England have a full-strength squad to select from and are likely to go with their best XI for the opening match. As was the case in South Africa in November, Jason Roy and Jos Buttler will continue to open with Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow at three and four. The major talking point in the bowling attack is whether Sam or Tom Curran plays but it is the left-arm variety of the younger brother Sam who might get the nod.

Possible XI: Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid

What they said

No, I don't. I actually think it's England who will be the team to beat. They're the number one side in the world and the prime focus will be on them in this World Cups. All the other teams will be wary of the strengths that they bring on to the park and every other team would agree with what I say: it's England who are the favourites and that will not change regardless of how they think - Virat Kohli doesn't agree that India will be favorites
