Less than six months ago, the Immigration New Zealand offices in Hamilton underwent a massive surge in personnel. The staff was in fact tripled to deal with the rapidly increasing list of pending visa applications from India, with a bulk of the work shifted out here from their Mumbai offices. And the expansion continued as 2019 drew to a close.

It, if anything, mirrored the incessant influx of Indians into this quiet town pretending to be a city in the last half-a-dozen years with many leaving the riches and the expensive lifestyle of Auckland behind. So much so that some locals believe their number too has tripled in the recent past. Though a lot of that has to do with the never-ending need for labour on the multitude of cattle and dairy farms all across the Waikato region, a lot of Indians have also moved into the city seeking other jobs.

Not like moving from Auckland to Hamilton is a very cumbersome task, considering how close they are -- all of an hour and 25 minutes away on a state highway where the speed limit doesn't go past a 100 kph. Think of driving from the southern part of Mumbai to Pune on a weekday morning. Hamilton is more or less the same distance but based on travel time, you'd be where Panvel is currently.

And it's a rather buoyant and confident Indian team that would have made that journey two days prior with a bid to win the T20I series before they head further south to Wellington. Much like their compatriots who preceded them to Hamilton, Virat Kohli & Co too will hope to continue with what they did in Auckland, but at a more relaxed pace in a small but still spaced out setting.

Not like they won't have to immediately get their heads on the job and shake off the understandable comfort that comes with a 2-0 lead in a five-match series. Seddon Park is as high-scoring a venue as Eden Park, even if you are hitting to or over more even-sized boundaries. The two-day break between the second and third matches would also have given the visitors the time to completely shake off their jetlags too, and also get themselves out and about in the sober yet quiet city surrounds of Hamilton.

In Hamilton though, you're not too far away either from breaking away from the mundane and soaking in some of the more serene sights that the country has to offer. Just walk along the Waikato river or spend an evening at the Hamilton Gardens, and you know why Auckland doesn't seem like a first-choice option anymore to hang on in, especially when you can just travel a little and be that little more successful with little less stress, like Kohli & Co will want to do on Wednesday (January 29).

When: New Zealand v India, 3rd T20I, January 29, 20:00 Local, 12:30 IST

Where: Seddon Park, Hamilton

What to Expect: The Hamilton sun is as unrelenting as what you get in Auckland, but the nights are certainly cooler and less humid, and neither team will mind that. Unlike Eden Park though, where the Black Caps' record is bordering on awful, the hosts have turned Seddon Park into some sort of a proverbial fortress. They have only lost two of their 9 T20Is here. Tim Southee referred to the pitch here as a typical white-ball pitch, which should mean a lot of runs and boundaries. But unlike what we saw in Auckland, the Kiwis know how to defend in Hamilton, as they showed exactly a year ago by beating India with a four-run margin after posting 212. With some early morning rain expected, the pitch should be primed enough by the evening for the ball to come on, and for the boundary-hitters to get going. India could not just seal the series but also drill a little hole in the Kiwis' wonderful record here.

Team News

New Zealand

Scott Kuggeljein looks all set to get a go after warming the bench for the first two games. He was impressive in the nets with his changes of pace to the skipper, who in turn looked pleased with the fast bowler's variations. Later on, he was also the only one to get a lengthy bat as Blair Tickner and Hamish Bennett ran in and bowled for a majority of the practice session. There's also a possibility of Daryl Mitchell coming in as the batting all-rounder, and therefore strengthening the power-hitting equation of New Zealand's batting. Both Mitchell and Kuggeleijn played key roles in their team's victory over the same opposition when a T20I was last played here 12 months ago.

Probable XI: Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tim Seifert (wk), Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Scott Kuggeleijn, Hamish Bennett/Blair Tickner/ Daryl Mitchell

India

It's quite incredible that only three out of the 11 who played New Zealand in Hamilton last year are even in the squad this time around. Rohit Sharma had led the Indians with Kohli resting. But here, following two low scores, he spent a copious amount of time in the nets-with lengthy sessions, including one facing throwdowns at the very end followed by a long chat with Ravi Shastri and Vikram Rathour about playing the full, wide delivery. India had failed after coming very close to downing the target last year. But the way Shreyas Iyer is batting currently tells you what or who India was missing back then. It would be very unlikely India look to make any changes with Shardul Thakur expected to take the new-ball again.

Probable XI:Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul (wk), Virat Kohli (c), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

Squads:

India Squad: Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul(w), Virat Kohli(c), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar
New Zealand Squad: Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson(c), Colin de Grandhomme, Ross Taylor, Tim Seifert(w), Mitchell Santner, Blair Tickner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Hamish Bennett, Scott Kuggeleijn, Daryl Mitchell

Pollard's effort in vain as rain foils WI's series-levelling plans

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Rain had the last say in Basseterre as the keenly-contested second T20I between West Indies and Ireland was abandoned early into the chase, scuppering the hosts' chance to draw level in the series after a stunning defeat in the Grenada opener.

Showers had been forecast in the build-up to the contest and before the first interruption could hit the game, West Indies had taken full advantage of the conditions by electing to bowl on a helpful pitch and dismissing Kevin O'Brien - one half of that stunning opening assault in the first game. There was no encore from Paul Stirling when play resumed after an hour's delay as he was sent packing for 17 by Sheldon Cottrell, forcing the visitors into a period of reassessment.

Captain Andrew Balbirnie and Gareth Delany turned the tide with an enterprising 72-run stand off just 43 deliveries, with 10th over of the innings - bowled by Hayden Walsh Jr - proving to be the highlight of their day. Delany (44 off 22) smashed four consecutive sixes off the leggie, one of which hit the upper deck of the grand stand straight down the ground, and another that cleared it.

West Indies were in dire need of some bowling smarts and it was their captain, Kieron Pollard, who brought oodles of it at a time when Ireland were looking to step it up to another gear. Pollard served up an assortment of variations, his changes of pace proving particularly difficult to blast through. In successive overs, he removed both Delany and the Balbirnie and suddenly sent Ireland into a tailspin. Cricket Tips

Pollard added two more wickets - those of Gary Wilson and George Dockrell - to register career-best figures of 4 for 25 in T20I cricket but Harry Tector's 23-ball 31 allowed the visitors to reach a competitive 147/9 from 19 overs, with an over lost after a lengthy second rain delay.

Ireland made a strong start when stand-in skipper Stirling (Balbirne suffered a hamstring strain) brought himself on and dismissed Lendl Simmons in the first over. But Ireland were denied a chance to push for a first series win against a full member moments later as the heavens opened up for the third time, forcing the officials to call off the game.

Brief scores: Ireland 147/7 in 19 overs (Gareth Delany 44, Andrew Balbirnie 36; Kieron Pollard 4-25) vs West Indies 16/1 in 2.1 overs (DLS Target: 152 from 19 overs) Match Abandoned.

'I love five-day Tests, but my role isn't about making decisions based on what I love'

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts is bracing for "the biggest two years in the history of Australian cricket". There's the T20 World Cup later this year, for starters. "It's a lot of work for our organization and lots of work for the players, but we wouldn't change it for the world," he says.

Excerpts from the interview...

The story goes what when the ball-tampering scandal broke, you were in a train with a bag which had a CA logo on it. You turned it around so no one could see it...

Yes. Having loved the game since I could walk, and having had so many experiences in the game and formed so many friendships, it was the first time that I hadn't felt proud to be involved. Literally, it was an unconscious thing to turn the bag around and not to display the logo.

Was the public backlash that severe?

It was significant. And it was magnified based on the landscape that we're living in, in terms of social media. So there was real outrage. But to the players' credit, and to our association's credit, the public have fallen in love with the men's team again.

Before you were CEO, there was a review which revealed a 'win-at-all-cost' culture. Did that culture lead to 'SandpaperGate'?

The cultural review gave us a good opportunity to look in the mirror. The term used at that time was "winning without counting the cost". It prompted us to drive a cultural change. Our goal is still to win, but the expectation is to be humble, to compete with respect.

Tell us about your meeting with Indian cricket board (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly...

I caught up with him in Mumbai. In a short time, he has shown progressive thinking and a future focus. We had some productive conversations.

Did those conversations dwell on a separate tournament featuring the 'Big 3' of India, Australia and England?

It's not something that we've discussed specifically but I think it's a really good example of the innovative thinking coming out of the BCCI under Sourav's leadership. We welcome consideration of any relevant innovation.

Won't such an event put you in direct conflict with ICC's own plans for more global tournaments?

The schedule is very full as it is. It's a matter of working beyond the current Future Tours Programme (FTP) which is set till 2023. The term of the next cycle appears likely to be till 2031. It's important that all ICC members have a voice. Cbtf Cricket

If cricket has to expand globally, the impetus has to come from the 'Big 3' since they generate so much of the revenue. How do you reconcile that with your individual commercial aspirations?

The BCCI deserves credit in terms of how generous they are when it comes to growing the sport internationally. India tours more than anyone. They play more days of cricket than anyone. They're actively developing the game. On our part, we're all conscious of the need to help.

When it comes to broadcaster influence, is there a line which administrators have to ensure is not crossed?

Broadcasters are a really important stakeholder, the commercial side. Fans are a critical stakeholder too. The players are the stars. We don't look at just one perspective. The fourth (factor) is development of cricket at community level.

Does CA have a position on four-day Tests?

Not at this point. We're going to ask ourselves the right questions and the hard questions. Interestingly, there's been like 130 three-day Tests, 120-odd four-day Tests and there's been 100 timeless Tests. So Tests haven't always been five days. It's also interesting to see how many matches are finishing inside four days. The data is being considered. Personally, I love five-day Tests. But my role isn't to make decisions on what I love.

Why not have four-day 'pink-ball' Tests and five-day regular Tests?

It's not a binary discussion of four or five days. There needs to be a balance of head and heart. If it was purely based on the numbers, it doesn't pay respect to the game's history. The concept does raise interesting possibilities like starting Tests on a Thursday, to give fans the maximum opportunity to watch on a Saturday and Sunday.

A lot of good teams were kept out of the 50-over World Cup last year...

It's important that the T20 format stays the key driver of the game's development. The shorter the format, the closer the contest between a developing nation and a traditional powerhouse.

Would you like to see the T20 World Cup expanded?

Yes. There's a great example in terms of FIFA World Cups over the last 30-40 years, how they've been able to use those as a great way of developing the game globally. We can do something similar.

There's a lot of concern about players' health, both physical and mental aspects. Glenn Maxwell being the latest...

Mental health and well-being is a growing issue in society. Cricket and cricketers are not immune. We've got to be vigilant and supportive of the players. Everyone needs a break, needs to refresh. We have to keep an eye on workloads when it comes to the next FTP. We've got a very strong view that international cricketers should not be playing any more cricket than they already are. It's also important for players to have other interests, to pursue another aspect of life.

Does cricket need a 'climate policy' of sorts? If it's bushfires in Sydney, it's the smog in Delhi...

We've developed a hot-weather policy ourselves. We're proud to become the first cricket nation to have done that. This year we are working on evolving our environmental sensibility more broadly. When the air quality is at a hazardous level, one of the challenges is to measure the air quality at the venue instead of the nearest measuring point which might be a few kilometres away.

The best you've played with and against?

The best I've played with is Steve Waugh, because of his intensely competitive spirit and drive. He was a strong leader too. The best I've played against is Courtney Walsh. I think he took 1807 first-class wickets and I helped his career along, because without me he would only have 1806!

Do administrators need to have played cricket?

Absolutely, because they need to understand the soul of the game. Ideally, you need a background in cricket and a background in business. It's not just about the numbers.

Bess fifer rattles South Africa

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Coming into the Test, Faf du Plessis was under pressure as a batsman as he had failed to lead the way with his personal performance in the last few months in Tests. So, on Saturday, when he walked out to bat at the fall of Dean Elgar's wicket, the intention was to go on the attack against the spinner - Dom Bess, who had till then accounted for the first three wickets and was expected to be England's biggest strength with the ball on a pitch that had an appreciable lot for the turners.

Du Plessis stepped out once and hit him straight down the ground for a boundary. He stepped out again the next ball, with the same result. The early aggression did enough for Joe Root to remove the close-in fielders and the bowler to change his angle and come over the wicket. What, however, didn't change was du Plessis's intention to attack. He stepped out again, twice, but only to block the deliveries. However, when he did that for the second time, he ended up inside edging the ball straight to the forward short leg fielder. His dismissal had reduced South Africa to 71 for 4 within the first half an hour of Day 3. The momentum, which was already heavily in favour of England, tilted further towards the visitors, and du Plessis's torrid run continued.

The match situation also allowed England to continue with their attacking approach. Even as Root kept only a solitary slip fielder to begin the proceedings, when the ball was given to Mark Wood, he did keep some creative field sets and the pacers induced edges. Stuart Broad, in particular, was impressive with his cutters which held on a bit after pitching. One shot by Rassie van der Dussen just went past Dominic Sibley at short cover and one fell just ahead of Broad, who was on his follow-through. Despite some testing bowling, there was no success for the English pacers. Anrich Nortje - Cricket Betting Tips who had come in as a nightwatchman last evening - ensured that he did well to keep the short-ball barrage out of danger despite his limited skills with the bat. He remained unbeaten through the first session, remaining unbeaten on 14 in 88 balls.

Van der Dussen, despite some early struggle, did well in the company of Nortje to keep the English bowlers at bay for more than an hour. Runs started flowing well as the duo eased in the middle as they added 38 runs for the fifth wicket. However, in the last few minutes of the session, van der Dussen decided to cut Bess off the backfoot but ended up inside edging it on to the stumps to offer the offie his maiden Test fifer.

Lunch was taken 15 minutes before the scheduled time due to rain as South Africa went to break on 113 for 5, all five wickets falling to Bess.

Stokes, Pope lead England's dominance on second morning

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
The blueprint to pick wickets was laid out on the opening day itself, with two successes to boast for - a packed legside field in the inner ring waiting to pouch catches flicked off the middle and leg stump line. Faf du Plessis stuck to the same plan on Day 2 morning but Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada didn't bowl with as much discipline; and the English batters - Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope - didn't fall for it as easily. Instead, the batsmen, who had resumed the innings having already stitched a 76-run stand on Thursday, grew comfortable through the course of the first 45 minutes.

With the original plan not yielding results, du Plessis urged them to play the cut shot with a vacant backward point. Even that didn't do them any good. And if anything, it leaked some runs. One of which helped Pope bring up his fifty. With Rabada, Nortje and Philander failing to make inroads with the newish ball, it took almost an hour before Keshav Maharaj - South Africa's most impressive bowler - was brought into the attack. He got the ball to turn sharply, but Stokes played him with as much ease.

The southpaw, who hogged the majority of the strike in the partnership on Friday, went on the attack soon after. In the 100th over of England's innings, he swept and slog-swept the spinner for a boundary and a six. Soon, as Stokes kept marching on, South Africa's captain ran out of plans, before the all-rounder eventually brought up his ninth Test century. It wasn't the most fluent innings, but in conditions where run-making hasn't been easy, it wasn't surprising that it was his second slowest. En route to that landmark, he also became the seventh player to complete a Test double of 4000 runs and 100 wickets. Cricket Prediction

If at all South Africa came close to break the partnership, it was only a few overs before Lunch when Pope was adjudged leg-before off Dane Paterson, only to have the decision overturned with a review. He went to Lunch safely at 75, with the unbeaten 187-run stand for the fifth wicket taking England to 335/4.

Brief Scores: England 335/4 (Ben Stokes 108*, Ollie Pope 75*; Kagiso Rabada 2-70) vs South Africa

KL Rahul steps up as India level series

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Jasprit Bumrah's return to form after KL Rahul's late assault restored normalcy for India, who righted all the wrongs of Mumbai in Rajkot to bounce back from their ten-wicket loss and level the three-match series. Bumrah's 1-32 in 9.1 overs was instrumental in India's 36-run win on a batsman's pitch, with negligible dew as Australia were bowled out for 304.

Bumrah didn't even bowl his quota of overs in Mumbai, taken for 50 runs in the seven overs he bowled. In contrast, in Rajkot, he was key for India's stellar start in a steep run-chase for Australia. He tested the Australian openers in a passage of play that had more plays-and-misses than runs as he persisted with a good length just outside the line of offstump as Aaron Finch was stuck on the crease. India had overpitched to Finch in Mumbai, which he took full advantage of, but on Friday (January 17), the pacers offered no width and pulled back the length a tad bit. Finch was left fishing most times with no timing, while David Warner at the other end, didn't get going at all. Australia needed Warner's brisk start if they were to stand any chance of chasing down a steep target. His departure early that was brought about by Manish Pandey's one-handed stunner at cover-point not just put an end to his misery, but also pegged Australia back quite early with them failing to make the most of the powerplay.

Finch was scratchy from the onset, getting just 6 off 18 balls much in contrast to his 25 off 18 in Mumbai. He jumped at anything with width, but struggled against the nagging length outside off that Bumrah persisted with, bowling back-to-back maidens, and ending his first spell, giving away as good as nothing, conceding seven runs in four overs. India persisted with New Zealand's short-ball ploy against Smith, who made a scratchy start of 4 off 15 balls. Smith and Finch joined hands for a 62-run rebuilding Australia's chase with the visitors matching up to India in 20 overs. The pair handled Kuldeep Yadav quite well early on, using their feet well against him, but it was Ravindra Jadeja, who pulled things back with Finch's wicket, having him stumped. It was a decision that was so tight that it could have gone either way, and the third umpire deemed that there was nothing behind the line.

It brought to the middle Marnus Labuschagne, who was playing his maiden ODI innings, being denied of it on debut in Mumbai. Jadeja had bowled two good overs with Finch's wicket but was taken off the attack as Kohli brought back Kuldeep, and Shami, who was expensive. Labuschagne and Smith did what they did best - keeping the scoreboard ticking. They kept busy, running the singles and doubles while getting the boundaries when they could. Labuschagne made the transition from Tests to ODIs seamlessly, comfortable in the middle as the pair went on to add 96 runs for the third wicket that came in good time too. They used their feet well, and kept India's bowlers at bay as Smith reached his fifty.

Jadeja returned after being used in short spells and dried up the runs in a passage of play that frustrated Smith as the required rate crept towards the nine-run mark. Labuschagne was nearing a fifty, but threw his wicket away, holing out to long-off. Kuldeep returned, tossed it up, and scalped Alex Carey and the big wicket of Smith for 98 in the same over to hand India the game, and also became the fastest Indian spinner to 100 wickets. Cricket Betting Tips India got 91 in the last 10 overs thanks to Rahul's blitzkrieg, but Australia's lack of a late power -hitter-cum-finisher cost them as they were unable to recover from Smith's departure in the end.

Rahul earlier, capitalised on the form he is in and raced away to a 52-ball 80, instrumental in India getting to 340, showcasing his versatility at a position that isn't his regular batting position. At one stage, it looked like India would get well past 350, but wickets in quick succession dented them. That, however, didn't deter Rahul, who went after the Australian pacers, with their best pacer in Pat Cummins having only the one over left. Rahul's attack on Starc especially left the pacer conceding his second-highest number of runs in ODIs with 78 in 10. While Australia's bowlers bowled a lot of short balls in the death, in contrast, yorkers from India's bowlers in the same period worked wonders as wickets fell in a heap.

That, after Rahul and Kohli cashed in on some wayward bowling from Australia in a stand that fetched India 78 in quick time. Cummins, who had bowled 7 overs off Australia's first 17, was brought in at that point with the visitors desperate to break the stand. It was Adam Zampa - in his final over - who provided them with the key wicket of Kohli at a crucial time, to account for the Indian captain for the fifth time in ODIs. Kohli lofted a loopy one straight down the ground as Agar plucked it just inside the boundary line, and tossed it over to Starc to complete the catch as he went over with Zampa finishing with 3-50 on a wicket that had little for the bowlers. After much debate following the opening ODI when Kohli came in at 4 to accommodate three openers, he returned to his regular spot at No.3 and his success at the spot continued as he controlled and led India's charge after they were asked to bat. Following the dismissal of Kohli, India were 280 for 4 in 44 overs. Manish Pandey fell soon after but the set-batsman Rahul, who was on 44 off 34 then, took over and launched a counterattack. He found the boundaries at will, dispatching Australia's pacers to all parts as India scored 53 in the final five.

Rohit and Dhawan gave India a strong start upfront, despite Cummins's probing lengths. Starc strayed a tad bit and the openers took advantage, conceding 20 in three overs forcing to Australia to bring on Kane Richardson. The change bowler wasn't spared either as both the openers got stuck into him, compelling Finch to introduce Zampa's leg-spin earlier than he would've wanted with Cummins keeping things tight from one end. Zampa stepped up and ended the opening stand that threatened to get away from them in just his second over, trapping Rohit leg-before against a fuller ball that was too full to be swept.

Dhawan and Kohli joined hands to power India to a position of strength with a century stand - one which Dhawan dominated. The left-hander looked like he wanted to make up for last game's missed chance to convert his fifty-plus score into a century, but perished to a poor shot off as poor a ball from Richardson. It was short and headed down leg when Dhawan decided to pull it straight to fine leg when on 96. Kohli's 78 wasn't a knock typical of the Indian skipper but was one where the dots balls were far lesser with the highlight of his 76-ball stay rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard ticking while stitching partnerships with Dhawan and Rahul. While the other bowlers were being taken to different parts of the park, Zampa was the standout, bowling stump to stump, keeping the ball up, attacking the batsmen with his accuracy and bowling quite full, making it difficult for the batsmen to get under him to put him away.

Hard man Boucher inherits job of softening Rabada

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
Cricket is no longer the sport Mark Boucher used to play, but as South Africa's coach he has inherited the challenges of the modern game. And at the top of that list is a problem bursting with talent and skill - but who explodes with poorly directed aggression too often for his own good and for the good of his team.

Kagiso Rabada will miss the series-deciding fourth Test at the Wanderers next week while he serves a ban for his behaviour towards Joe Root. After clean-bowling the England captain with the best ball delivered on the first day of the third Test at St George's Park on Thursday, Rabada celebrated loudly and passionately within millimetres of the dismissed batter. That earned him a level one conviction for "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his or her dismissal during an international match". He did not contest the charge. His sentence of a fine of 15% of his match fee and one demerit point meant he had piled up four points for - which prompted the one-match ban.

The current version of the code of conduct came into operation in September 2016, more than four years after Boucher had retired. He played 147 Tests as a wicketkeeper-batter between October 1997 and November 2012, and was recognised as one of the most aggressively competitive players in the world game.

"In our day we didn't have to deal with this stuff because we could say pretty much what we wanted and get away with it," Boucher said after stumps on Friday. "So it is a learning curve for me with all these new rules and regulations that have come in. I heard about it this morning. I've just come into the system and I wasn't aware of the demerit points; that whole system and how it quite works. So to hear [Rabada is] going to be banned for the next Test is a massive blow to us. He's a world class performer, especially at the Wanderers, where I think he'd be very effective."

Boucher has been South Africa's coach since December 14, or long after Rabada racked up his first five sentences for bad conduct in his dealings with batters. How will he fix the problem? "'KG' probably bowls at his best when he's nice and aggressive," Boucher said. "It's trying to find a balance between keeping him nice and aggressive and not boxing him in. But understanding the laws of the game and trying to stay on the good side. It's going to be tough but it's something we will have to address. 'KG's a team man, so he'll feel very disappointed."

Did Boucher apportion more blame to the code's sometimes overweeningly precious provisions for player behaviour, or to Rabada himself? "Both. Not talking with a coach's cap on, you don't want to take all the aggression out of the game of cricket. You've got two countries playing hard cricket against each other in a heated situation. Guys are trying really hard. Sometimes their emotions overflow. Maybe I'm a little bit disappointed in the rule and regulations. But if you know the rules and regulations then you've got to stick to them. 'KG' knows what he can and cannot do, and he maybe pushed a little bit too far."

Even so, Boucher didn't struggle to form his own firm view on what Rabada had done: "I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. In our day we'd try push very hard for a win and try make batters feel uncomfortable if we were on top. But the laws have changed. I understand where the ICC want to go with it, but hopefully they find a balance and they don't take the emotion out of the game." Match Prediction

That approach wouldn't have helped the South Africans when they met with match referee Andy Pycroft on Thursday. "We voiced our concerns over the rule that he quoted to us and a couple of variations of the rule," Boucher said. "It's a tough one because the talk about excessive celebrations in the area of the batter and making contact with the batter ... I don't feel he made any contact with the batter. He wasn't even looking at him. Yes, he was in his space. But there's probably different ways you can look at it. But it doesn't really matter how we feel now."

It doesn't. What does is how South Africa are going to fill the Rabada-sized hole in their attack at the Wanderers. And stop Rabada from leaving it in future.

Rahul at 5: Another shuffle, another show of versatility

Picture
www.cricketbettingtipsfree.net
When Australia took on India in the SCG Test in 2015, the immensely talented KL Rahul gave a glimpse of his Test match credentials with a brilliant 110 off 262 balls. The opener was standing tall at the crease, employing the V-grip and playing late - the kind of game that seemed tailor-made for the longest format of the game.

However, in about 12 months' time, Rahul was ready to show that he was a versatile batsman, who could also make a mark in T20 cricket. The opener accumulated 397 runs at a strike rate of a tad more than 146 in the IPL. Rahul 2.0 using a strong bottom-handed grip to play through the line was a different batsman to the one who wore Australia down at the SCG in 2015.

Since then he has gone on to play for the country in limited-overs formats and also found some success. However, with India having a settled opening pair - Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma - Rahul has struggled to nail down his spot in the shorter formats of the game. He has also batted at different positions in the order, making it difficult for him to stamp his authority.

In the ongoing ODI series between India and Australia, Rahul batted at number three in the first ODI before being asked to play the role of a finisher in Rajkot. This was a new challenge thrown at Rahul; the right-hander had played just once at a slot lower than the number four position in ODIs before the Rajkot game. Just that Rahul once again showed that he was a versatile batsman, finishing with a breezy 52-ball 80 to pilot his side to a match-winning - and series-levelling - total.

Here was a batsman who was ready to clear his front leg to thump Adam Zampa straight down the ground. And the audacity to loft one of the finest white-ball bowlers of this generation, Mitchell Starc, over deep extra cover for a six. The way Rahul went through the gears also opened up a possibility of him becoming the new 'finisher' in ODIs. In the recent past, India's middle and lower-order batsmen have tended to struggle against hard lengths, but the Karnataka batsman has the ability to take on hit-the-deck pacers.

"Look I have always opened the batting. That is the position, order I am most comfortable with, and I know how to build my innings. But I get to learn so much about my skills about my batting... batting as an art when I get the chance to bat at 3 or 4 or 5," Rahul said in the post-match press conference. "I'm kind of enjoying it (batting at different positions), I'm finding new ways to counter bowlers, new ways to handle situations. I don't look at it as pressure, something like an opportunity and I will try to play it the best I can," he added.

Rahul also said that he watched videos and spoke to some of the contemporary middle-order batsman to fine-tune his game "I just spoke a lot more to middle order batsmen. I watched a lot of videos, I spoke a lot to Virat, watched a lot of videos of AB or Steve Smith for the matter on how they build their innings. Kane Williamson, who I have tried to go back and watch some of his videos to see how they build their innings, and how they play in certain situations. Only thing I have tried is how to be better in certain situations. And reading of the game has got a lot better now that I have played in different positions."

Rahul also observed that the think-tank's plans were crystal clear in the slog overs - try to collect as many boundaries and get to a score of around 330. "Plans were very clear, last five overs try to score as many runs as you can. You do lose wickets in the last 10 overs because you look to get as many runs as you can. We knew that we had to get anywhere between 320 and 330. Losing Virat didn't really change our plans, Jadeja came in, the plans stayed the same through, hit as many boundaries as you can. And if you can't get the boundaries, try to get twos."

With Rishabh Pant ruled out of the game due to concussion, Rahul also had the uphill task of keeping wickets to a versatile attack. However, the unassuming cricketer did an admirable job behind the stumps, showing decent glove work even while keeping wickets to India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Match Tips

"Jasprit, I always felt when I used to bat against him in the IPL, I felt like the best place to be against Jasprit is behind the stumps. But now that I have to keep wickets, it is still hard. The way he bowls, swinging the ball both here and at the Wankhede, there is a bit of a wobble. For somebody who isn't a regular keeper, that can be pretty hard, we have seen even for regular keepers, he is a nightmare to keep. But I am enjoying it. Try to read the situation and try to do the best for the team."
